Intertheoretic Reduction: A Neuroscientist's Field Guide
نویسنده
چکیده
Might psychology someday be reduced to (= exhaustively explained by) computational neurobiology? Many still say no. We approach this question through a brief survey of some prominent intertheoretic reductions drawn from our scientific history. A general charactITization of reduction is constructed from these, and some important philosophical and methodological lessons are drawn. The five most popular objections to the possibility of a neurobiological reduction of psychology are then addressed and defeated.

Explanatory Pluralism And The Co - Evolution Of Theories In Science
Over the past decade or so Patricia and Paul Churchland have made major contributions to philosophical treatments of intertheoretic reduction in science. The historic importance of this issue in the philosophy of science is patent and so, therefore, is the importance of the Churchlands’ contributions. Their insistence on the centrality of this issue to discussions in the philosophy of mind may,...
متن کاملWho’s Afraid of Nagelian Reduction?
We reconsider the Nagelian theory of reduction and argue that, contrary to a widely held view, it is the right analysis of intertheoretic reduction. The alleged difficulties of the theory either vanish upon closer inspection or turn out to be substantive philosophical questions rather than knock-down arguments.

1. Introduction: Simple Reduction and Beyond Traditional and New Wave models of reduction in science have not lacked for ambition. Philosophers have presented single models to account for the full range of interesting intertheoretic relations, for scientific progress, and for the unity of science (Nagel, 1961; Oppenheim and Putnam, 1958). Early critics attacked the logical empiricists' proposal...
متن کاملMarrying the merits of Nagelian reduction and functional reduction
This paper points out the merit of Nagelian reduction, namely to propose a model of intertheoretic reduction that retains the scientific quality of the reduced theory, and the merit of functional reduction, namely to take multiple realization into account and to offer reductive explanations. By considering Lewis’ and Kim’s proposal for local reductions, we establish that functional reduction fa...
متن کاملReducing the dauer larva: molecular models of biological phenomena in Caenorhabditis elegans research
One important aspect of biological explanation is detailed causal modeling of particular phenomena in limited experimental background conditions. Recognising this allows a new avenue for intertheoretic reduction to be seen. Reductions in biology are possible, when one fully recognises that a sufficient condition for a reduction in biology is a molecular model of 1) only the demonstrated causal ...
